A root canal is a restorative treatment that involves treating the soft inner tissue of the tooth, or pulp, to save the patient’s natural tooth, as well as the surrounding gums and bone.
This treatment is very common and returns full dental function to the patient, as well as their natural smile. This treatment, along with good dental hygiene and proper dental care, allow the patient to keep the repaired tooth for life.
A root canal, or killing the nerve, is carried out when the tooth’s pulp is damaged to the point of being unrecoverable. The most common causes of this tend to be untreated, deep tooth decay or traumas. In any of these cases, the tooth can become very sensitive to temperature changes (cold or hot), as well as to chewing.
The pain can be intermittent or constant and can even cause changes in coloration of the tooth. In the event of an infection, the patient could experience phlegmons or fistulas.
Root canals can be carried out in one session, but this varies from patient to patient as each case is unique. It could take up to two sessions. The endondicist at The Practice, Dr. Carolina Briedis, recommends the best option for your particular case.
